Chengalpet municipality faces wrath of public

The Chengalpet municipality has earned the wrath of the people and elected public representatives following choked drains and poor amenities.

Advocate N. Selvaraj, a resident of the area, said that the public has been demanding drainage connection for the past two decades and talks to provide drainage network began 13 years ago but remains in paper.

The municipality and the government machinery has failed to address the civic woes of Chengalpet residents.

“The entire Chengalpet is stinking and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” said senior citizen M. Raju of Gokulapuram.

Municipal officials do not conduct periodical inspections and the entire locality has been suffering from water borne diseases, he lamented.

Chengalpet legislator D. Murugesan of the DMDK said that both the Dravidian majors have failed to address the public issues.

The issue has been taken up with the state government seeking action and a consortium of civic activists have even made representations seeking early completion of the Rs 84 crore drainage project.

The project aims to improve sanitation in the area and government should speed up the project, said the legislator. Rs 1 crore has been already provided by the government to the municipality to start the work.

The area needs a sewage treatment facility and the project is hit by a land acquisition row, the MLA said.

Chengalpet revenue divisional officer Chellapa said that the government was keen on establishing an underground drainage system.
