[1]The city traffic police is set to launch a set of changes in the traffic routes in the city and enforce more one-way systems on thoroughfares to ensure smooth flow of traffic and bring down congestion.
The cops are mulling a plan to convert all the pocket roads that connect Chittoor Road to MG Road and the latter to Park Avenue Road and Foreshore Road as alternate one-ways.
“The roads will be made as alternate one-ways. This means that if entry to Press Club Road is allowed only from East to West, the very next stretch, Capt B Unnikrishnan Road will have West to East entry. And Canon Shed Road will have East to West entry again,” said a senior cop.
Kovilvattom Road, Muslim Street, Jew Street, TD East Sannidhi and West Sannidhi Roads, Gopala Prabhu Road, Convent Road, Press Club Road, Narakathra Road, Capt B Unnikrishnan Road, Mullassery Canal Road, Canon Shed Road and Government Press Road will be the major stretches that undergo a change between MG Road and Park Avenue Road and Foreshore Road.
Several pocket roads including the Veekshanam Road, Rajaji Road, Ammankovil Road and Mullassery Canal Road will also undergo traffic changes, based on the new plans.
The one-way system is followed in several of these roads, but the new plan will see all the pocket roads in the city taking one-way status, which is expected to help the cops decongest the traffic.
The decision, which would surely help commuters have a hassle free drive, will be discussed at a top level meeting here.
The regional transport authority will also have to give the plan a nod if the new directives are to be applied.
