To curb the spate of accidents on highways, occurring mostly due to judgment errors, the Maharashtra highway police has appealed to state transport department to conduct a detailed analysis on the driving behaviour of these drivers.
“It has been revealed that 80 per cent of the accidents take place due to human error,” said a senior highway police officer.
The highway police has written to the transport department to appoint an independent agency such as Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) in Pune or any reputed private group to study the drivers’ living and working conditions, working hours, physical and economic background.
The findings, the police believes, would help them formulate an effective strategy. “We will be able to comprehend factors, whether the drivers avail sufficient leaves, physical fitness and their
job security,” said the officer.
The officer added that the analysis would also help formulate the working hours of the drivers and the amount they should earn.
State transport commissioner V.N. More said that continuous measures have been taken to counsel the drivers. “We have started workshops for drivers of commercial vehicles,” he said.
