Metro cracks the whip against crimes

Following a few cases of theft at Metro stations coming to light over the recent months, Namma Metro has come out with a list of offences and penalties under the Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 in order to curb such crimes.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has authorized station controllers to impose penalties on any person committing any of the offences mentioned in the list inside Bangalore Metro Rail premises. People can even land in jail if found endangering the safety of persons traveling by the Metro or illegally traveling on the train.

Commuters of Metro rail travelling on trains under the influence of alcohol would do well to be careful as drunkenness or nuisance on Metro Rail will attract a fine of Rs 500 along with forfeiture of fare. A drunk passenger can also be removed from the train. People found taking or causing to take offensive materials on Metro Rail shall be liable to pay a fine of up to Rs 500 and shall be held responsible for any loss, injury or damage to Metro Rail. Any dangerous material, if carried by a passenger, shall attract imprisonment of up to four years along with a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and the person shall also be held responsible for loss or damage to Metro property.

One can also land in jail for life if it is found that a passenger has maliciously hurt or attempted to hurt another person traveling on the Metro. It is said that endangering the safety of persons traveling by Metro, willfully or by mistake, would attract imprisonment up to seven years. “Station controllers are authorized to impose a penalty on any person found involved in any of the offences mentioned under the Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002. They are also authorized to detain any person found committing any of the offences and hand them over to police for further action as per law,” said a senior BMRCL official.
