The much-awaited report of the six-member committee constituted by the state government following the Madras high court’s direction to frame regulations for governing the educational institution vehicles will be submitted to the state government on Thursday.
The transport department finalised its proposals on Wednesday after consultations with school education department officials and the police department at state secretariat.
The meeting chaired by home secretary R. Rajagopal held discussions on the report for more than two hours with the school education department officials on Wednesday evening.
“The work on devising a set of regulations to govern vehicles used by educational institutions had been completed on Wednesday and the recommendations of the committee were placed before the officials of school education department and police department,” sources told Deccan Chronicle.
Directors of school education, elementary education, matriculation schools, and city traffic additional commissioner had participated in the meeting, the sources said.
The report has taken into consideration the recent developments in the automobile sector and road safety aspects and has incorporated a few regulations that are in force in other states.
“Earlier, there were no stringent rules to rein in school private van operators. Now they will be made accountable for irregularities.
Besides, rules for vehicles used by educational institutions will be more stringent and the inspection period of those vehicles is likely to be reduced. The specific lifetime for such vehicles will also be fixed,” said a senior official.
After examining the report, the government will submit it to the high court.
