Biometric punching at corporation office

In an effort to rein in freewheeling employees, the corporation on Wednesday introduced a biometric punching system at its main office.

This is the first time that a local body in the state is introducing biometric punching for its staff. Mayor Tony Chammany inaugurated the new system.

The staff has been provided with a unique identity (ID) number with the ID card. All employees, including the corporation secretary will have to punch in and punch out each time they enter and leave the office.

“The employees will have to do the punching in person as we have incorporated the impression of their index fingers in this system. It will also function as a movement register”, said the mayor.

To begin with, the system would run on a trial basis for a month and after that, biometric attendance registering would be made compulsory for all employees.

The punching system would be introduced in all other offices of the corporation by September 1, the mayor said.

The new punching system has been installed by KELTRON and the total cost of the machines is
Rs 15.4 lakh.

Earlier, the trade unions had objected to the civic body’s decision to introduce biometric punching and the mayor had to hold talks with the union leaders.
