Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday claimed that people have started returning home from refugee camps after improvement of situation in violence-hit districts of Assam.
Informing that government has fixed August 15 deadline to ensure rehabilitation of all those displaced, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “Displaced people are returning to their homes and, on Wednesday morning, 14 relief camps in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts have been closed and over 12,000 people have returned to their villages.”
Claiming that the security forces have already identified vulnerable areas, Mr Gogoi said, “The people want to return and the sense of insecurity is gradually going down.”
“A detailed security plan has already been drawn which envisages idea of setting up of 104 police pickets,” he added.
He informed that 10 police pickets have already started working and security personnel would be deployed on 19 another by Wednesday evening.
“We will be constantly monitoring the situation,” the chief minister said, adding that “We will have to ensure there is no recurrence of such incident. We will be monitoring the situation, especially in such areas where one community is in minority as most incidents were reported from such areas.”
Refuting that there was any problem in supplying relief to victims, Mr Gogoi said adequate relief materials was distributed in the relief camps and the government is providing all assistance to the people to rebuild their houses.
