[1]A day after the agitating jat leaders cut off the water supply to the city, the crisis deepened in south and east parts of the city. Though the agitators called off their protest on Monday morning, normal water supply to the city is expected to be resumed only by Tuesday evening, as the treatment plants, Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi, went dry on Monday.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, while stating that she was disturbed at the development, told reporters that she had taken up the matter with the Union home ministry, Union water resources ministry, Cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar and social justice minister Mukul Wasnik. “Water is a fundamental right. You can not just stop water supply whatever be the agitation. We are going to make every possible effort to ensure that Delhi gets water,” Ms Dikshit told reporters.
UP chief minister Mayawati, in a statement released to the media, stated that though she supported the demands of the agitating jat leaders, she had asked them to hold their protests peacefully and march to Delhi to raise their demands.
In the meantime, South and east Delhi faced massive water crisis, as the Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plants cater to demands of more than 40 per cent of Delhi. Though the Delhi Jal Board supplies on an average 740 MGD water daily, it could supply around 500 MGD. The DJB is planning to divert water from Chandrawal and Wazirabad treatment plants to Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi plants.
DJB chief executive officer Ramesh Negi said though water has been released from Murad Nagar at 11 am, it would take six hours for the raw water to reach the city and another few hours to reach the households. He also stated that the agitating jat leaders had damaged the regulator and some time will be needed to repair and restore it.
The agitating leaders had stopped on Sunday supply of water for Sonia Vihar treatment plant.
