The new district which will be carved out of Burdwan district will be called Asansol-Durgapur. This was announced by state law minister and MLA from Asansol Malay Ghatak on Friday.
He inaugurated the Red Ribbon Express upon its arrival at Asansol station. The Red Ribbon Express seeks to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS, promote safe sex and reduce discrimination against AIDS victims in India. “The state secretariat has given its consent to the bifurcation of Burdwan district and all the formalities for the creation of the new district are almost complete. The new district will be called Asansol-Durgapur and Asansol will be the district headquarters,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, mayor of Asansol Town Tapas Banerjee said that it would be dream come true for the people of Asansol and Durgapur region.
