The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) and the Slum and JJ wing of the MCD are in consultation over ways to ensure that children do not fall victim to trafficking, prostitution and child labour during Commonwealth Games 2010.
The civil society organisations have expressed apprehension that the demand for boys and girls will rise for labour at construction sites, as domestic helps in bed and breakfast accommodations and prostitution and traffickers would be looking to make money.
A senior DCPCR official said that volunteers may be deployed to keep an eye to prevent child trafficking. Already, the DCPCR, the MCD and the corporate are working on a plan to provide 10,000 volunteers for Games.
A number of NGOs have requested the government to direct the hotels, restaurants and bed and breakfast centres to display boldly the child protection laws on their premises to prevent any abuse of children.
The DCPCR is also mulling re-implementing the National Child Labour Project which was stopped in 2008. Under the scheme, the children rescued from abusive situations were to be given Rs 20,000 from the state concerned and Rs 5,000 from the Centre. The children were also supposed to be rehabilitated in their native places.
