Why a rolling tear is a sign of manhood

Like aggression or exhilaration, isn’t crying also an expression of your feelings? While women are known for their ability to roll out that perfect teardrop, what makes a man weep? Recently Andy Murray revealed that the last thing he wanted to do was to burst into tears on court after losing the Wimbledon final — but he could not stop himself.

Through the years a man has been a symbol of strength and so it has been expected of him to stand by that image. And yet, when he expresses himself through his tears, he is looked at with disgust as if it’s in direct violation of the laws of machismo.
Although many feel that Murray’s manly tears were unacceptable, others believe that it’s just about releasing pent-up emotions and nothing to be ashamed of.
Crying doesn’t make you any less of a man. It is not a sign of weakness just as laughter is not a sign of strength. Crying is a sign of a man’s sensitivity, wherein it indicates his ability to understand pain and hurt. Not to cry on the other hand could indicate that a man is above the pain of others and can’t be easily moved.
“Crying is a very basic human emotion which just shows how human a man is and that he too is affected by pain and hurt. When Andy Murray cried, he expressed his deep pain about losing what was truly his dream and something, which would have reserved him a place in history. The realisation of that moment can be hurtful and crying would have made him feel better and given him the courage to move on,” says author Vikrant Dutta.
Content developer Pradeep Kaimal says that irrespective of sex, everyone cries. And it’s time we do away with stereotypical notions that only women cry and a blubbing man doesn’t belong to this planet.
He says, “It needs a lot of courage to cry. In fact a man who doesn’t cry is not a man. It may be expiation or propitiation but when you cry and when those tears roll down your cheeks, you actually acquire inner strength.”
Management guru Nitya Prakash blames it on society, which lets a man laugh but not cry.
“No one wants to keep their emotions bottled up. I am a very sentimental man. I cry when I feel sad and frustrated. I cry when I am extremely happy. For me, crying signifies that a man is strong enough and sure of his manhood that is why he is confident to show the world what he feels; that he has emotions and that he is human. It certainly helps being at peace with your emotions,” he sums up.
