Torrential rains in various parts of Uttar Pradesh have not only thrown normal life out of gear but have also led to swelling of major rivers in the state.
Several parts of the state have been witnessing incessant rains since the past 36 hours. According to the Met department, Basti recorded 21 cm of rainfall which is the highest in the state followed by Balrampur (14 cm), Ayodhya (12 cm), Bahraich (11 cm), Kanpur (10 cm), Ballia and Gorakhpur (7 cm) while Lucknow also recorded 7 cm of rainfall. While water-logging remains a problem in various cities, including Lucknow, several villages have also been inundated due to excessive rainfall.
Power breakdowns and disruption in telecom services has also been reported from several places. The Central Water Commission said major rivers have started rising in the state due to rainfall in the plains as well as the catchment areas.

Yannick attack: sp son in custody
Patiala, July 8: Romi Uppal, son of a senior police officer and a key accused in the case of attack on Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza, was on Sunday remanded to two days police custody. Romi was produced at Jalandhar in a court which sent him to two-day police custody.
Uppal, son of Punjab superintendent of police Dharam Singh Uppal, had surrendered before police on Saturday.
However, another accused in the case, Amandeep Singh, was still at large. The police had earlier arrested Sahil Deep Singh and another accused Sumeet in the case.
Meanwhile, Yannick’s family on Sunday said that they have got partial relief as three persons have been arrested by the Punjab police and the state government has come to their help after the media highlighted their plight. They, however, attributed the help as “too little too late”.
Yannick’s cousin brother Deogratias said here that “It’s been 79 days. A police officer is supposed to protect people, not to harbour a criminal. There are other criminals, they have to be arrested”. — PTI
