The discovery of a new sub-atomic particle crucial to understanding how the universe is built, announced in Geneva Wednesday, has a significant Indian connection.
The particle, known as Higgs Boson, is partly named after Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose, who worked with Albert Einstein in the 1920s and made discoveries that led to the most coveted prize in particle physics.
Over 100 Indian scientists, from Kolkata’s Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and Mumbai’s TIFR, among others, played a role. Said CERN spokesman Paolo Giubell-ino: “India is like a historic father of the project.”
