The CBI, probing alleged irregularities in implementation of the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam in Uttar Pradesh (UP), has sought details from the state government regarding central fund utilised under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) in 40 districts during BSP regime.
The agency officials are analysing district wise data on the number and detailed list of beneficiaries under the JSY for the years 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08. There are allegations that Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) of around 40 districts allegedly misused central funds released under the NRHM for JSY, sources said.
The CBI suspects that the funds were siphoned off from the offices of CMOs. A sub-scheme of the NRHM, the JSY is a 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme and integrates cash assistance with delivery and post-delivery care and aims at reducing maternal and neo-natal mortality among poor pregnant women.
The agency has already registered 14 cases as part of its probe into alleged NRHM irregularities. It is likely to file more cases even as it undertakes the misuse of the NRHM funds in each district.
Meanwhile, the CBI is set to register 50 more FIRs in connection with the case. Fresh FIRs will be registered to probe alleged misuse of funds allocated to Chief Medical Officer (CMO) offices in 72 districts of UP under various NRHM schemes. Sources said, “Now the CBI is preparing to register district wise FIRs pertaining to the case. If required, the agency may register more than 50 FIRs to probe the scam. The agency has so far arrested total 10 persons in connection with the case.”
