Rescuers on Sunday pulled out four-year-old Mahi dead from the 70-foot-deep borewell near Manesar where she was trapped for the past four days.
“Mahi was pulled out from the borewell... She is dead,” Gurgaon district magistrate P.C. Meena said.
Late Saturday night rescuers pierced a hard rock in their efforts to reach the girl, trapped in the pit since June 20. The hard rock was a major hurdle which rescuers had struggled to break for three days.
Dr Deepak Mathur, CEO of Manesar’s ESI Hospital, where Mahi’s body was taken, said she could have been saved. “It was bit difficult, but there was a possibility of her survival even on oxygen alone. She died due to lack of air, she couldn’t breathe,” he said.
He said he was aware oxygen was supplied to Mahi since rescue efforts began, but survival depends on when it was supplied. Dr Mathur, who conducted the post-mortem, said Mahi died of asphyxia (suffocation) “within five to six hours after she fell into the borewell”. Her body was highly decomposed, indicating she might have died around three days ago, Dr Mathur said.
