The CBSE Board has ordered that no school bus carrying students should overtake a four-wheeler.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in its revised by-law for its affiliated schools, has also made it clear that schools should not employ drivers who have past histories of getting booked by the police for over speeding or signal jumping.
The Central Board of Secondary Education secretary Mrs Veera Gupta in a circular to all schools stated that in the past, parents, the state Transport department and the Supreme Court had raised the issue of students’ safety and the Board and various courts had, time and again, issued directives for safe transportation of school students.
“School authorities should ask at least one teacher to accompany students in school buses keeping in view the safety of students throughout the journey. To keep students’ bags in a safe manner, schools should fit a box under the seat,” she said.
Schools should not employ a driver who has been fined more than twice in a year for offences like red light jumping, violation of lane discipline or allowing unauthorised persons to drive.
The Board has also suggested that school authorities, in case of any doubts whether the driver has consumed alcohol, should do regular checks and proper action including recommendation to cancel the driver’s license should be taken if the tests are positive.
