Minority institutions in the city are up in arms against the government’s order, asking them to complete FYJC admissions for minority and reservation quota seats before the online admission process starts on June 21. Junior college principals of minority institutions say that filling up 50 per cent seats in four days will be impossible, and they will be forced to surrender the quota seats, which will be injustice against the students who can avail of these.
Speaking about the problem, professor A.E. Lakdawala, principal of Royal College, Mira Road and secretary of the Minority College Principal Association (MCPA) said, “We have time and again requested the government to do away with the rule of completing admissions for quota seats before the online admission process starts, as it becomes very taxing on colleges. Apart from this, the rule will ruin the chances of eligible students from getting a seat in reputed colleges.”
He added that the MCPA had asked the government to allow the minority institutions to continue admitting students to the minority and reserve quota seats simultaneously when the online admissions are on.
“Our association has maintained that minority colleges, which are sure that they will not be able to fill up the quota, are free to surrender their seats to the government. We also said that the colleges which know they can fill up the quota should be allowed to continue admitting students till the online admission process is on,” he said.
Another problem for the minority institutions is Union minister for minority affairs Salman Khurshid’s warning that minority institutions will have to face strict disciplinary action if they do not fill up the minority quota.
“We are caught in a catch-22 situation,” said Dr M.A. Farouqui, principal of Rizvi College, Bandra. “While on the one hand, the state wants us to surrender minority seats that we are unable to fill before the online admissions starts, on the other hand the Central government has warned us of action if these seats are
not filled,” said Dr Farouqui.
