Responding to all the media speculation over whether Deepika Padukone and he had reconciled, in a recent interview, Ranbir Kapoor told mediapersons to stop linking them up constantly. All perfectly innocuous. His next comment however, wasn’t quite so. For Ranbir then told the media that Deepika was “from a nice family and he hoped she would get married and settle down soon.”
Ranbir, known for his hip, trendy personality was caught making a comment that sounded ridiculously old fashioned and chauvinistic.
Pratiksha Kher says she is appalled by Ranbir’s comments. “It brought to mind something my mother used to tell me. She’d say ‘Men don’t marry the women they date’. That’s an outmoded thought, but it’s a metaphor for the double standards men often have,” she says. Media professional Nimish Sawant agrees. “This is so archaic. Who is he to say that she has to settle down? Deepika is a modern woman and she will settle down if she has to. Ranbir has no business making such comments in the media.”
Men agree that most members of their species tend to have double standards when it comes to women. Recounting a reality show track, Clint Fernandez says, “This guy, one of those uber cool types who loved to party, told the girl he was hooked up with that he didn’t like women who partied!”
“That’s because men have this fixed idea of a “good woman.” There are very few who aren’t rigid and judgmental,” remarks photographer Shobhan Singh. “But if Ranbir just said that he “hopes” she will get married, I don’t really see anything earth-shatteringly wrong. Sometimes we read too much between the lines.” Blogger Bharat Iyer has a similar opinion. “Reading through his comments, I just think he was trying to say something safe and acceptable to divert attention from the gossip and ended up with an epic fail,” says Bharat. “Maybe he didn’t quite articulate what he wanted to,” says Nimish. Judging by the mixed reactions to his comments, we hope Ranbir does a better job of articulating in the future!
