Construction of a “park island” around the statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar at the Sitaphalmandi road junction has kicked up a row, with a section of locals opposing the move. According to them, the open space around the statue can be used to build a bus shelter or any other infrastructure project that would aid the commuters. Residents said the carriageway on the road is being occupied to construct the 6- to 10-foot park island. The locals had in fact opposed installation of the statue itself 10 years ago but a bust was later mounted on a 10-foot pedestal.
“How can GHMC, traffic and revenue authorities allow encroachment of road space?” asked local resident S. Kishore. According to Shyamala, a resident of Nomula Chambers, like hers, many other families have concerns over security. “Once the park island around the statue is constructed, anti-social elements can climb up the ladder and enter our apartments,” she said. She also said the park island would eat up the auto-rickshaw stand there.
Meanwhile, SC and ST Welfare Association leader Vidyasagar Rao claimed there was no mass opposition to the project from the locals, barring a handful of shopkeepers and residents. “It is being constructed with funds released by the local corporator. We are not encroaching on any private property,” he said. Local corporator Adam Vijay Kumar confirmed that he sanctioned the money but added: “The park island around the statue will be constructed in consultation with all sections of residents. The issue will be resolved amicably.” GHMC zonal commissioner (North) S. Hari Krishna said he will depute officials to look into the issue.
