The Madras high court on Monday granted six weeks to the state government to come out with the final amendments for the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act (to regularise the unauthorised constructions in the state).
A division bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam posted to July 24 further hearing of a batch of petitions and said “Till then status quo (in connection with the buildings in T. Nagar), already granted to continue.”
It recalled its April 2 order, which directed the state government to take a final decision within three weeks on the recommendations of the Justice Mohan Committee that dealt with issues relating to unauthorised constructions.
It said today that a counter affidavit has been filed by the state stating that a draft bill has been prepared by the law department for amendments to the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, which will be placed before the Assembly during the winter session and hence six months may be required for the amendments.
