The inquiry committee appointed by the state government to probe the “sale of PG medical seats” under the management quota for the new academic year 2012-13 in private medical colleges has detected grave irregularities in the allotment of seats.
The three-member committee found that the admission applications issued by managements to students were equal to the number of seats available in the colleges, proving beyond doubt that the managements issued applications only after admissions were confirmed and denied applications to other students.
The committee recommended that NTR Univer-sity of Health Sciences, the regulator of medical colleges in the state, should direct 19 private medical colleges involved in irregularities to invite fresh applications through the online mode to ensure transparency.
The inquiry report stated: “It was observed by the committee in almost all of the colleges, the number of applications sold is almost equal to the number of seats available in management quota. Considering the demand for PG seats, the number of applications received in all the private medical colleges is low.”
The committee headed by Dr K.Vishnu Prasad, director of medical colleges, has three principals from government medical colleges as members.
The report has been submitted to the Medical Council of India, which will take a final decision on management quota admissions made by private colleges. Altogether 750 PG medical seats are available in the state, 375 of them in the management quota.
The demand for seats is huge, and the colleges have been allegedly auctioning the seats up to `1.5 crore for each.
There were complaints that some colleges had not issued admission notifications in prominent newspapers as mandated. When students asked the colleges for the application forms, they were told that the seats were already filled. Several candidates had complained to the MCI, which asked the state government to probe the issue. The MCI threatened to cancel the admissions that had been made in violation of the norms.
