Schools have found a novel way to fill the 25 per cent reservation of seats to the economically weaker sections with implementation of Right to Education (RTE) Act from this academic year.
If the number of applications received is more than the seats available in the 25 per cent reserved category, lots will be drawn to decide on filling them.
“Parents are ignorant about reservation of seats. Even when school managements explain that they are eligible and ask them to provide income certificates, they do not do so as they fear that their wards might not be selected in the lot system,” said Dr. N. Vijayan, correspondent of Zion Schools, and general secretary, Federation of Matriculation Schools.
The correspondent said that the government would reimburse school fees after three months. However, it was still unclear who would bear the cost of uniforms and notebooks.
“Parents will take care of uniform costs and we have finished intake at entry level,” said J. Ajeeth Prasath Jain, senior principal of Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram.
“The government already provides free uniform to government and aided schools. It is for the government to clarify about uniforms,” Rajagopalan said.
