After the Supreme Court had refused to extend the deadline for vacating cancelled 122 licences for 2G spectrum by 400 days as demanded by the Centre, the government on Tuesday offered to withdraw its review petition against the top court’s February 2 verdict on the issue.
Review petition had raised two aspects — extension of the four-month deadline for vacating the spectrum licences by 400 days and questioning the SC’s power of judicial review in policy matter — but with the denial of the extension beyond August 31, the government decided to withdraw the petition on the second aspect.
This apparent was done because the government has already sent a presidential reference on the issue of extending its power of “judicial review” by the Supreme Court to executive domain and the continuing with the review petition would have resulted in overlapping the same issue in two parallel proceedings.
An advocate on record has written a letter to the registrar judicial of the top court.

World-class skill centre in Delhi to be set up

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said the Delhi government is in the process of setting up a “Green Field World Class Skill Centre” at Jonapur in collaboration with the government of Singapore and preparing trainees to meet the global market requirement. “The Delhi government has taken several steps towards the skill development programme. The department of training & technical education is playing a pioneering role in imparting vocational training in the state. Under the department of training and technical education, 6 engineering colleges, a college of art, Delhi institute of pharmaceutical studies and research, seven polytechnics, 16 industrial training institutes and 8 private polytechnics are running,” she said.
