Chennai suburbs Ponneri and Minjur are all set to get new RTO offices.
The state government is likely to announce in the Assembly on Tuesday about setting up of seven new road transport offices (RTO) and unit offices across the state, in a move to provide easy access to aspiring drivers and vehicle owners who put up with long travel to avail of these services.
With RTOs and its motor vehicle inspector’s offices (unit office) in Chennai and suburbs bustling with more number of registration of new vehicles - around 500 vehicles a day - the state transport authority felt the immediate need for new offices, sources in the department told DC on Sunday.
Further, applicants and vehicle taxpayers from far-flung areas have to travel more than 50 km to avail the services of RTOs.
For instance, driving licence aspirants hailing from northern most villages surrounding Gummidipoondi, Uthukottai or Madharpakkam bordering Andhra Pradesh have to travel at least 30 km to 60 km to reach the nearby RTO offices in Red hills or Tiruvallur.
Consequently, it has been decided to create new RTO and a motor vehicle inspectors’ office (unit office), at Gummidipoondi or Ponneri and a unit office in Minjur, besides in four other deserving places across the state, sources added.
A proposal had already been sent to the higher authorities and it is likely to find a mention in the announcements to be made by transport minister in the Assembly Tuesday.
