A day after Union home minister P. Chidambaram assured a CBI probe in the alleged suicide of Dana Silva M. Sangma if necessary, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday wrote to his Haryana counterpart, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, asking that the probe be handed over to CBI.
Dana, a 21-year-old first year MBA student of Amity University and niece of Meghalaya chief minister, was found hanging from the fan of her hostel room in the university’s Gurgaon campus on April 24. She reportedly took the extreme step after being accused of cheating in exam. Her classmates allege that when she protested, the invigilator humiliated her and tore her answersheet.
Confirming that Mr Sangma has written a letter to the Haryana CM on Thursday, the office of Mr Sangma in Shillong said he has also demanded a probe into the allegations of negligence against the institutions where Dana and Manipuri student Richard Loitam were studying.
On April 17, a native of Imphal, Manipur, and first-year student of Acharya NRV College of Architecture, Bengaluru, Richard Loitam was found dead in his hostel room. The police did a volte-face by changing the case of the suspicious death of Loitam to that of murder, as was feared initially.
In case of Dana also, it was found that her classmates were threatened by the university not to speak on the issue.
Mr Sangma recently said, “Few people, who are completely insensitive to the need of positive contribution for strengthening the country, continue to indulge in discrimination against youth from the Northeast. We must put an end to this.”
