More number of students aspire to join computer science in class 11 this year as they look at engineering as a better career option than medicine.
They say it would take at least 10 years to earn a decent pay packet if they pursued medicine.
R. Sanjay, a class 10 student waiting for results, says he loves to take engineering as it offers a passage for easy money rather than medicine as one needs to set up a clinic, which needs huge investment.
“After completing MBBS, we need to set up a clinic which will require a minimum investment of `3 lakh and the amount you earn will range between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000.
But, in the case of engineering, once you finish B.E. and get placed in IT companies, you start earning Rs 25,000. So, I think it would be better to pursue engineering,” he said.
N. Ramya, another class 10 student, pointed out that even though a person graduates with M.B.B.S., it would be of no use if he does not complete postgraduation with specialisation in a subject.
“What’s the use of just having an M.B.B.S degree and join the bandwagon of doctors as you cannot earn more? To pursue a postgraduate degree, you need to spend at least Rs 1 crore on donation and fees,” she said.
R. Rahul, who is aspiring to pursue engineering, said medical colleges had very few seats for postgraduation and only a handful of students can pursue it in a college every year, compared to engineering which had more colleges which offer postgraduate cour-
ses.
