Rs 100 cr to give facelift for government colleges

The infrastructure in government colleges will be improved at an outlay of Rs 100 crore this year, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly on Wednesday.

“All 93 government and university-constituent colleges across the state will be equipped with better facilities,” chief minister J. Jayalalithaa said.

Making a suo motu statement she said her government had decided to improve infrastructure in colleges to ensure that students learn in an encouraging environment.

“A total of 62 government arts and science colleges, seven government educational colleges, 24 university-constituent colleges will be provided all the necessary infrastructure,” the chief minister said.

“I am happy to announce that Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the purpose. The government has for the first time allocated a huge sum for improving the colleges.

I hope that the fund will go a long way in improving the standards in colleges and equip the students well,” Ms Jayalalithaa said.

She said funds would be utilised for purchasing furniture for students and teachers. New and modern black boards would be installed in classrooms and computer tables and chairs would be provided to language laboratories.

Chairs and tables would be purchased for libraries at colleges. Shelves will provided to libraries, besides new books will be purchased and libraries computerised, the chief minister said.

Basic amenities like providing protected drinking water for students and teachers would also be taken up.
