The revelation could add momentum to calls for an international investigation of possible war crimes during the final months of fighting in the war that ended in 2009.
The government has repeatedly denied using cluster munitions during the final months of fighting.
An email obtained by the media from a top U.N. demining expert said unexploded bomblets were discovered near where a girl was killed and a second injured when they stumbled on unexploded ordnance while searching for scrap.
