A 45-year-old woman went through a catheter based-technique for lowereing her blood pressure at a city hospital, where she was admitted after being diagnosed with Treatment Resistant Systemic Hypertension.
Usha, who went through a renal sympathetic denervation procedure used for the first time in TN at Fortis Malar Hospitals, suffered from a condition in which blood pressure is uncontrolled despite the use of an optimal dose of three anti-hypertension agents, including a diuretic.
The doctors said that the woman’s condition had stabilised after the procedure and she is leading a normal life.
When doctors ran tests on her, they found that Usha’s blood pressure was abnormally high.
“Increased sympathetic outflow is a fundamental abnormality prevalent in most hypertensive patients.
There are several drugs available to treat hypertension. However, they cease to have effect on some patients,” said Dr K. Chandrasekhar.
“In such cases, renal denervation causes substantial reduction of blood pressure without serious adverse reactions,” he said.
After the procedure was completed, the patient was kept in the intensive care unit for observation over a night and was discharged the following day.
Within a week of the procedure, with the administration of low doses of medication her blood pressure levels came down significantly.
