Trial begins to take stink out of decaying organic waste

If this trial succeeds, you can escape the stink from the solid waste piled up on road sides, though not from the waste itself.

City-based team G.J. International, in association with a UK-based organisation, Caring for Nature, demonstrated a new technology using enzymes to control the odour of decaying organic waste.

The corporation has also extended support for the 22-day-long trial which began at Padiyathukulam.

Under the programme, an enzyme concentrate was sprayed on the waste. This will be repeated in the next two days and the expert team from Caring for Nature claimed that the foul smell would be gone by the time.

Team members, Steve Joan from the UK and Vron Franz from the US, also claimed that the patented technology was being successfully used in major waste treatment and pollution control projects across 38 countries. And no side effects were so far, they claimed.

The trial was part of the ‘Clean Cochin’ initiative taken up by the corporation. Present during the trial were deputy mayor B.

Bhadra, health standing committee chairman T.K. Ashraff, town planning committee chairman K.J. Sohan, works committee chairperson Soumini Jain and top officials of the corporation.
