The CBI’s supplementary chargesheet in the Bhanwari Devi abduction and murder case, filed in Jodhpur before a local court on Saturday, claims that it was part of a conspiracy to defame Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, and the incident was used to upstage sacked minister Mahipal Maderna. The CBI has termed Indira Bishnoi the key conspirator. Ms Bishnoi has been absconding for the last five months.
The investigators found that Ms Bishnoi, the sister of arrested Congress MLA Malkhan Singh, not only played a key role in the kidnapping and murder of the nurse, but also provoked sacked policeman-turned-small-time political worker Kanaram Devera to drag Mr Gehlot’s name into the case by saying that Bhanwari had called on the chief minister and made him aware about the CD allegedly showing Bhanwari in a compromising position with Mr Maderna. According to the chargesheet, Devera, who belongs to Bhanwari’s Sansi community, was asked by Indira Bishnoi to highlight the issue in a different way.
According to the chargesheet, Indira summoned Kanaram Devera on September 12, 2011 at her residence and had a meeting to brief him about how to present the issue before the media. Indira and Devera repeatedly told the local media that Mr Gehlot was aware of the CD.
The chargesheet also said that Indira tutored him how to make statements and highlight that he, along with Bhanwari, met the CM. Devera confirmed the same in his statements.

Senior BJP leader and former home minister Gulab Chand Kataria is all set to embark on a 28-day-long rath yatra from May 2 in tribal-dominated south Rajasthan. A section of the party has opposed it and requested the high command to prevent him from going on the yatra. A group of party leaders, led by former MLA Randheer Singh, called on BJP president Nitin Gadkari in Delhi and pleaded against the proposed rath yatra.
The Sangh Parivar-backed Mr Kataria will address over 150 public meetings in seven districts and touch all 28 Assembly constituencies in Mewar region. “My yatra is aimed at creating awareness about the Congress ‘misrule’ in the state. Elections are one-and-a-half year away. So it is not to dethrone someone immediately and regain power,” said Mr Kataria.
His arguments, however, could not pacify a faction of the party.
According to sources, former MLA Randheer Singh, former MP Dhan Singh and Chunni Lal Dhakad rushed to Delhi on Saturday and met Mr Gadkari. “We made our request to the party high command and we were of the opinion that the party should announce on its own about such yatras,” said Mr Singh. “Sabko saath lekar yatra nikalni chahiye (one should involve the party as a whole),” he added.
