In a move which will benefit differently-abled students the state higher education department has embarked on a mission to develop multimodal materials for the differently abled.
Higher education minister P. Palaniappan making the announcements as part of his department’s grants said that the government accords highest priority for academic and economic development of the differently-abled.
“Keeping in the mind the difficulties faced by the differently abled, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered all universities to set up centres for multimodal material production for these students. These centres will have audio-video facilities”, he said.
The minister also announced that the government would order colleges and universities to help slow learners by conducting special classes to help them cope up with academics. “We will also ask normal students to mentor the slow learners by forming groups. This will help slow learners from dropping out’, he said.
The state government has ordered universities to create soft skills centre for empowering students to develop managerial skills and to gain employability. “The centre will impart 60 kinds of soft skills subjects. These centres will also counsel students,” he added.
The state government has also decided to establish Tamil Nadu Open University’s zonal centres in Srirangam and Coimbatore.
“In the last eight years a total four lakh students have been benefited by various courses offered by the university. As it is difficult for students from all over the state to approach the university’s office in Chennai these zonal centres will help students redress their grievances in their locality,” he said.
