With Housefull 2 moving steadily towards the general direction of being tagged as a blockbuster hit, clocking up more than `85 crores in its first week, Akshay Kumar is back in business. The star has had a couple of lean films before this, but things are suddenly looking up for him with Rowdy Rathore and Joker to follow. Considering how Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn also have potential `100 crore films lined up this year, the race to the numero uno spot is heating up all over again.
“Salman has Ek Tha Tiger, which releases on Eid, a day when Salman’s track record is unbeatable. Then, on an extended Christmas weekend, he has Dabangg 2 lined up,” says an industry observer, noting that while Shah Rukh doesn’t have any releases lined up at all, Aamir Khan has just one in Talaash.
Indeed, Akshay’s biggest threat may come not from the Khans, but from Ajay Devgn, who’s got a bonanza year ahead of him. “Tezz is just a week away from release, but he’s got more coming up. Bol Bachchan sees Ajay team up with Rohit Shetty, a pairing that’s given successive blockbusters. He also has Son Of Sardaar, which has been confirmed for a Diwali slot,” adds a senior trade analyst.
