Care Hospital, Nampally, which had suggested a brain surgery for its patient Rajesh Kumar Agarwal for the headaches he was getting, had charged more than Rs 1 lakh for his ICU stay. Dr J.M.K. Murthy and Dr Sreedhar of the hospital had confirmed there was an aneurysm (small swelling) at the origin of the right anterior temporal artery and that it had a minor rupture which had to be operated upon and coiled. The radiologist had also predicted risks in the surgery including partial paralysis of the face and body and memory loss. However, the operation was later postponed by two days.
Mr Rajesh’s son, Amit Ag-arwal said that, thereafter, they consulted Nims and Kims, and Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. All said that it wasn’t an emergency and there was no bleeding. Tests showed that the actual problem was thrombosis in the sinus vein. The patient was successfully treated at Kims with heparin medicines to dilute the blood. Mr Amit said that after being rudely dismissed for cross-questioning the doct-ors, they discharged his father. But they were charged more than Rs 1 lakh for his dad’s five-day stay. The family filed a complaint with the APMC on May 2, 2011.
