Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa announced Tuesday a partial rollback of the hike in power tariff effected by Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) last week to benefit lower- and middle-class families.
“The move will benefit 1.5 crore families and the government would bear an expenditure of Rs 740 crore by way of providing additional subsidy to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco),” she told the state Assembly amid thumping of desks by the treasury benches.
The partial rollback would benefit households consuming up to 500 units in two months. A household consuming 100 units in two months would be charged at the rate of Rs 1 per unit, instead of Rs 1.10, CM said.
The new tariff for those who consume up to 200 units would be Rs 1.50, not Rs 1.80, per unit.
Those who consume up to 500 units would be required to pay Rs 2, instead of Rs 3, per unit for the first 200 and Rs 3, instead of Rs 3.50, for the remaining, she said.
With this, the government would pay an all-time subsidy of Rs 4,294.16 crore to Tangedco, Ms Jayalalithaa said.
