With the pedestrian overpasses with elevators, proposed during the previous corporation budget, yet to see the light of day.
The public strongly feels that the government should not invest money on foot overbridges (FOB), as it is only going to add to the traffic congestion in the city.
“A pedestrian over bridge would in no way be helpful to the pedestrians, especially senior citizens who find it difficult to climb stairs to get across the road. Given the power crisis in the state, there is a probability that the elevators may stop functioning in the event of a power cut,” said Narayanan, a sales man.
“Such FOB’s will be rendered useless. It is only going to make the traffic situation worse,” he added.
“I don’t use the pedestrian overpass, since it consumes time and energy to climb stairs to get to the other side. I suppose, a policeman could be deployed at congested junctions to help pedestrians cross over,” said Kalyan Raman, a businessman.
It may be recalled that, the city corporation had announced in the 2011-12 budget that pedestrian overpass with escalators would come up at three locations namely Cathedral Road, Usman Road and opposite T Nagar bus terminus. In addition, two existing FOBs on Haddows Road and Peters Road would be equipped with lifts.
However, the project proposed a year ago has been put on the back burner.
