All you speed demons getting ready to zoom on NICE Road, think twice. Officials from the police and Road Transport Office are putting forth a proposal before the government to allow them to monitor vehicles on the NICE corridor. The police took the decision following the death of Sushmita Patil (18), granddaughter of former MP R.S Patil and Davangaere MLA Shamanaur Shivasha-nkarappa, on NICE Road on Thursday morning.
Preliminary investigations suggested that Sush-mita and her three college friends were travelling in a Maruti Swift car, which was being driven by 19-year-old Arun Akhil at 120 kmph. He lost control and the car rolled five times before coming to a stop. A Ramnagar police officer told Deccan Chronicle that the speed limit on NICE road is 80 kmph, which is not followed by most of the drivers along this high-speed stretch. The police still have not confirmed whether Akhil had a valid driving licence; he is still being treated at a private hospital. The transport department officials are thinking of requesting the government to allow them to check goods carriers on the road.
