For someone who has always been in the news for her first row appearances at international fashion weeks, Sonam Kapoor says that she promotes Indian fashion wherever she goes.
Sonam Kapoor who was in the capital recently to support a charity programme, Design One organised by Sahachari Foundation says, “If one has been following me, one would have noticed that I mostly wore Indian designers. Like at the Elie Saab couture show during Paris Fashion, I wore a Deepti Pruthi sari. Even at the other shows that I attended, I preferred to wear young designers like Masaba Gupta, Anamika Khanna and others.”
Donning an Anamika Khanna at the event, Sonam says it makes more sense to promote one’s country internationally when one is aware about the richness it has, more so because today India is a growing market for international fashion, whether it is clothes, jewellery or any other accessory. “We have a great fashion sense and even greater fabrics like silk, chanderi and so much more,” she says, adding, “It’s exciting to represent the country internationally. I feel like a Cindrella,” she adds.
She says that even for the cover of Elle’s March issue, she has mainly worked with Indian designers.
Talking about the event Design One that aims to promote upcoming designers and women entrepreneurs, the actor says that she always supports good work. “It’s such a good initiative as the proceeds from the event would go to something useful,” says Sonam, who confesses that she is a shopaholic and even at the event she has bought some stuff to support the cause.
Lakshmi Nair, one of the eleven members of Shahachari, says that the presence of a Bollywood icon like Sonam Kapoor, will give the programme more visibility.
“This is the second time we are holding the exhibition in the capital and the response this time is much better than the first one,” she says and reveals that the funds collected from the event would go to Victoria Memorial School for Blind, Apne Aap — a shelter for children of the sex workers and The Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSCPA) that is one of the oldest animal society in India.
Sonam says that causes that the organisation is supporting bring her even closer to it. “They are really doing a lot for the three-four causes they are supporting. My heart goes out especially for the welfare of the pets as I’m a pet lover,” says Sonam, who even bought accessories for her dogs from one of the stalls at the exhibition.
