Wealthy men are more likely to be overweight than their middle or lower-income counterparts, a new Canadian study has claimed.
The University of Montreal research of some 7,000 people, aged between 25-65, found that rich men increase their likelihood of being overweight with every extra dollar they make.
“Many epidemiological studies have established that the odds of being overweight or obese decrease as family income increases,” said lead researcher Nathalie Dumas.
“But we don’t know why this relationship is inverted for Canadian men. According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, the richer they are, the fatter they are,” she added.
In the case of women, the correlation between wealth and weight was also found to be little ambiguous.
The findings, presented at the annual conference of the Association francophone pour le savoir, suggested that unlike Canadian men, wealthy women are less likely to become overweight compared to their middle-or lower-income counterparts. Though women aren’t spared by this correlation, Dumas said, the results are ambiguous as it showed “women from rich households are less likely to be obese than women of middle or lower income”.
