Soilless boost to terrace farming

Chennai high-rise dwellers can now learn sustainable, small-area terrace farming from Tigalli Mallesh comfortably from home. This Bengaluru-based entrepreneur is all set to offer live web interactive sessions from April 10.

Mr Mallesh’s Purna Organics has been transforming terraces and balconies in Bengaluru city into vegetable gardens with a scientific technique devised by his team. “Anyone with a minimum of 48 sq feet can grow their own vegetables and fruits using a special technique. We do not use soil, but a derivative of coconut husk mixed with nutrients to grow the plants.”

“This is not only light in weight, but also holds water longer and is easy to maintain. Also, we recommend usage of planter boxes that hold a considerable amount of water and retain it throughout the day. It helps prevent plants from drying up in summer. Plants are just like any other living being and when we nurture them right, yields follow automatically,” says Mr Mallesh.

Purna has demonstrated that with good maintenance, a 48 sq feet space on the terrace could yield about 500 grams of vegetables, quite enough for a small family. Balconies are also suitable, says Mr Mallesh as these get maximum, direct sunlight either in the morning or evening.

“A family needs to dedicate just 30 minutes per week for maintenance. If pressed for time, we even offer maintenance contracts in Bengaluru, which could be extended to other cities.” Mr Mallesh is also involved in setting up a vertical garden and other innovations.
