Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday told the Assembly that the government was taking several steps to set right the power situation and the crisis would be resolved by mid 2013.
Slamming the DMK government for doing little to improve the power situation, Ms Jayalalithaa said steps were being taken to achieve a capacity addition of 1950 MW power in June and 600 MWs in October.
She said the power crisis would not have struck if the erstwhile DMK government had implemented the projects introduced during her regime in 2001-06.
She said because of proper supervision and maintenance of power plants after she took over, they have begun to function effectively. She pointed out that production capacity of Tuticorin and Mettur power plants have increased since last year.
The chief minister said there were practical issues in procuring power from markets outside the state and the only solution was to expedite the works on various power projects in the state.
The state government had granted a financial aid of `6455 crore for TNEB in the current fiscal year, the chief minister said. She said the power shortage would be set right step-by-step from June and would be solved by mid 2013.
