Three more new-borns have died at the B.C. Roy Institute of Paediatric Sciences in Belighata since Sunday night, taking the total number of crib deaths to eight in the last 48 hours. Five infants had died at the hospital on Sunday.
The family members of one of the three deceased babies alleged medical negligence on the part of a nurse. Relatives of Jaya Singha, a child of one month and four days, claimed that the on-duty nurse did not attend her when she was gasping for breath, leading to her death early on Monday. The resident of Gaighata in North 24 Parganas was admitted at the hospital on Sunday evening. The hospital authorities, however, refuted the allegation of medical negligence. Medical superintendent-cum-vice principal D.K. Pal said that at least 50 new-borns in critical condition.

Drunk teacher makes girls dance; suspended
Betul (MP), Jan. 30: With a cane in hand, a drunken primary school teacher allegedly forced his girl students to dance in a closed room at Devchowki village here and also sent a boy to fetch alcohol for him and then consumed the liquor in front of the class.
The teacher, Mahesh Malviya, has been suspended. The incident came to light on January 23 when the girls complained to Betul collector Chandra Shekhar Borkar that the drunk teacher not only forced them to dance, but also caned them when they were unable to perform properly in a closed room. The collector, after conducting a probe suspended the teacher the next day for indulging in the indecent act, official sources said.
The parents of one of the school boys aged around 10, also alleged that the teacher asked him to buy a liquor bottle from a nearby shop after handing over `30 to him. Earlier also, allegations of misbehaviour with girl students and committing irregularities in the mid-day meal scheme were levelled against Malviya. — PTI
