The Samajwadi Party has declared Akhilesh Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate for Uttar Pradesh.
Leader of the Opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav told reporters in Etawah that the party was contesting elections under the leadership of Mr Akhilesh Yadav and if the party gets a majority, then he would be the chief minister.
This is the first time that the party has admitted to Mr Akhilesh Yadav being its chief ministerial candidate.
”It is natural that Akhilesh Yadav will take over the reins from father Mulayam Singh Yadav. In these elections, he has been leading the campaign and is an obvious candidate for the chief minister’s post if the party gets a majority on its own. One should not be surprised at this development,” said another senior party functionary.
However, party sources said that if the Samajwadis did not get a majority an a coalition government had to be formed in UP then Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav would be the chief ministerial candidate.
“Mr Mulayam Singh is better equipped to handle the complexities of coalition government and he would not like to burden Akhilesh with this task. Akhilesh will be chief minister only if it is an ‘easy’ government and then Mr Mulayam Singh will shift to national politics,” the functionary added.
That Mr Akhilesh Yadav is now completely ready to take over the reins of the party was very much evident recently when he refused to entertain the idea of inducting tainted politician D.P. Yadav and when SP MP Mohan Singh insisted on defying Akhilesh, he was instantly removed from the party post.
“That was Mulayam Singh’s way of confirming Akhilesh’s authority within the Samajwadi Party and the message has gone down loud and clear,” the functionary said.
