The Chennai police had been put on alert on Monday after they received a call claiming that there was a bomb on the plane in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would travel from Tiruchy to New Delhi.
The call turned out to be hoax and while sources claimed that two people were arrested and investigations were on, a senior police officer told this newspaper that the department was yet to get any clues.
Police sources said that a woman constable at the Pallavaram Police Station received a call at 1 pm on Monday stating that the caller had some important information to pass on to the police.
The constable immediately alerting her higher officials and security was tightened at the Tiruchy airport and all safety measures were followed with precision.
The special Air Force flight that had carried the prime minister from Delhi left Chennai at 11.35 am on Monday and reached Tiruchy at 12.10 pm. Airport sources said that the bomb squad and other security officials checked the aircraft thoroughly and also cordoned off other areas at the Tiruchy airport to ensure smooth travel for the prime minister.
With the flying route too under surveillance, the prime minister’s plane left Tiruchy at 5.30 pm and landed at Delhi safely at 8.20 pm.
Meanwhile, the state police began tracing the call. Their search ended at a house in Royapuram and the owner of the number was caught at Poonamalle on Tuesday morning.
However, after investigations, it was revealed that the person who was apprehended had called the police for some documents and the woman constable had mixed up the numbers.
