The maximum temperature was at 20.8 degrees, a notch below average for this time of the season. Humidity levels wavered between a high of 93 and a low of 31 per cent. “Trains were affected due to dense fog. There is a heavy backlog in trains, leading to many delays and rescheduling of trains," a Northern Railways spokesperson said.
"As many as 25 trains are running late and two services were rescheduled as dense fog reduced visibility to 500 metres in the morning," the official said. He added that as a precautionary measure, 31 long distance trains have been partially cancelled. A Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) spokesman told IANS that no flights had been affected on Monday. The weatherman has predicted a shallow fog on Tuesday morning. “The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 20 and 4 degrees respectively,” an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The bone-freezing chill forced people to wrap themselves in layers of woollens. According to IMD, the record for the lowest minimum temperature for the month of December is 1.1 degree Celsius, recorded on December 26, 1945.
