Unmanned aircraft shot down over Iran belonged to CIA, official reveal

An unmanned drone allegedly shot down over Iran belonged to America's Central Intelligence Agency, the Washington Post has reported.

The aircraft, with stealth capabilities, was being used by the spy agency for secret missions in Iran, US officials admitted.

The Post also reported that the RQ-170 model of spy plane was also involved in the Bin Laden mission, flying over the terror lord's Pakistan home for months before US special forces raided the complex.

A CIA spokesman has declined to comment on the report.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at the development of nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

Iran's semiofficial FARS news agency reported that the unmanned spy plane violated Iranian airspace along its eastern border.

The FARS report also added the drone and was now in the possession of Iran's armed forces. The FARS news agency is close to the powerful Revolutionary Guard.
