Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi on Tuesday accused the Delhi government of taking a hasty decision on the split instead of pushing the statehood issue first.
“We are opposed to the haste in which the Delhi Government took up the issue
of MCD division. The entire episode shows lack of its foresightedness for Delhi. We again reiterate the demand for setting up of mayor-in-council,” she said.
The Delhi Assembly will meet for two days from Wednesday to pass the proposal to trifurcate the MCD.
At a meeting of BJP legislative party meeting on Monday, almost all the BJP MLAs said the party should not oppose the proposal as the division of MCD was mentioned in the party’s manifesto for Assembly polls. “Making population the basis for trifurcation of MCD is the latest example to prove that the Delhi government lacks foresightedness and a vision for the citizens of Delhi,” Ms Abbi said. She argued that BJP in its manifesto also had talked about division of MCD but only when Delhi attained full statehood. “This was reflected in the unanimous resolution of the Special House convened by the MCD on the same issue. The Congress has been in power for over 13 years in Delhi and is also in power at Centre. Therefore, it becomes a matter of concern as to why the state Government is not doing enough to achieve statehood,” she said. “It is the same government which walked up to Parliament when NDA was in power to raise the issue of statehood for Delhi. And now when the Congress is in power at the Centre, the state government is not doing enough on the front,” she said.
