Two young telecom engineers were feared killed as they were carried away by tidal wave while bathing in the Bay of Bengal in Puri on Sunday morning.
According to police, a group of about 20 engineers serving in S. Accord Telecom company, Bhubaneswar, -had gone to Puri on a picnic trip. While they were bathing in the sea, a high tide hit them. Three of the engineers — Sonu Gupta, Hemant Adhikari and Ashiwni Shukla — were carried away in the tide.
“While the lifeguards deployed in the beach managed to save Ashwni Shukla’s life, the two others were carried away in the undercurrent of the wave,” said M. Tripathy, sub-divisional police officer, Puri.
Mr Tripathy added that efforts were on to trace out the missing engineers.
Sonu hailed from Korba area in Chhattisgarh while Hemant is said be a resident of Maharashtra.

Ops to trace missing sailors in Lakshadweep

The Indian Coast Guard, along with the Indian Navy, has launched search and rescue operations in the Lakshadweep Island area for missing sailors and those who are in distress due to depression or cyclone in the south-eastern Arabian Sea.
“The depression over south-eastern Arabian Sea, 220 km west of Thiruvananthapuram, passed over the north group of Lakshadweep Islands at around 6 am on Saturday and slowly moved in the northwesterly direction,” read a media statement of the Indian Coast Guard.
The administration of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep contacted the Coast Guard district headquarters located at Kavaratti to report for assistance.
