The Tihar authorities make strict security arrangements so that no inmates use prohibited substances inside the jail and ensure that no abusive substance reaches them in any way. But the inmates and their relatives keep dodging the jail authorities with innovative ideas and experiments.
Recently, the Tihar authorities banned fruits from outside because of the over-the-top experiment of the relatives of some inmates.
These relatives tried to supply currency notes and even drugs inside the jail by concealing them in the fruits they brought for the inmates.
“There were incidents when we found some doubtful fruits. When the fruits were checked we found that some relatives of inmates had craftily put a `500 note inside an apple. In another incident, we found a bunch of grapes made of plastic and on scrutiny we found that the grapes were filled with some banned drugs,” said a Tihar jail official, adding that the drugs were tied with nails inside the grape fruit.
The relatives of inmates had put currency notes and banned substances in the fruits so cunningly that it was really hard to detect for the jail staff.
“If someone leaves one kilogramme apple for any inmate then the only way for us to check the fruits properly is to cut them. Due to the complications in such checking, we decided to ban fruits from outside,” he added.
However, the jail authorities have permitted the relatives to buy fruits from the stalls inside the jail for the inmates.
“The inmates come to know about our frisking and security system well during their stay and so they try new techniques to dodge us. But we always remain alert, we keep upgrading and changing the system so that no one can take any banned substance inside the jail,” he added.
