Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Sunday threatened legal action against CPIM veteran V. S. Achuthanandan if he made ‘baseless allegations’ against party leader and Kerala Industries Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty in connection with the suicide of two girl students in 1996.
E. T. Mohammed Basheer, IUML State General Secretary, told reporters after an emergent secretariat meeting of the party here that criticisms against Kunhalikutty would be treated as those made against the party and IUML would face such ‘baseless allegations’ as a team.
Basheer said the party would resort to legal steps against those who make such charges against Kunhalikutty. "The party will go ahead with legal steps against Leader of Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan, if he makes baseless allegations against Kunhalikutty outside the legislative Assembly," he said.
The announcement follows demands by the Opposition for a fresh investigation into the suicide of two pre-degree girl students in 1996 at Kozhikode, allegedly in connection with the ice cream parlour sex scandal case.
Kunhalikutty was embroiled in the ice cream parlour case and quit as the Industries Minister in 2004. The case relates to allegations that surfaced in late 1990s that an ice cream parlour in Kozhikode was used as a cover for luring young women into sex rackets.
On October 19, a local court had directed the special investigating team officer probing the case to submit a report into the suicide of the two girls.
